Nick Campbell (aka Greyscale Gorilla and noted blogger and educator), posted a video on texturing and lighting an iPhone in Cinema 4D. Besides a lot of useful techniques (most of which apply to other 3D packages just as well), Nick demonstrates what it takes to match a render to a reference as closely as you possibly can. His thought process and approach to this challenge is a valuable technique...

another bit of inspiration
I knew about Jamie Beswarick from a couple of forums but haven’t had time to look for his work. I stumbled upon Jamie’s blog just recently, so I’m posting a link. His creature designs are always inspirational and executed with incredible precision, he’s got to be one of the best creature designers and sculptors around today.
